Does your dryer run hot? Is the lint trap damp? Do you smell something a little off? Does it need two cycles to dry a load?
The problem isn’t with your dryer. It’s your dryer vent.
ABD Air Duct and Vent Cleaning handles full-service dryer vent repair, professional installation, and complete replacement for homeowners and property managers throughout Fairfax, both the city and the county. Searching for dryer duct repair, clothes dryer vent repair, or dryer vent installation? You’ve found it in ABD, a locally owned Fairfax small business.
ABD is licensed, insured and locally owned, with a 5.0-star rating across hundreds of Google reviews. Every dryer vent service call to ABD starts with a real diagnosis instead of a guess, so you’ll see inside your own duct before you approve any work. We examine the duct and the vent cover with customers, so they know exactly what we’ll be doing and what the final result will be.
On this page we provide you with the warning signs to watch out for . . . the repair services ABD performs in Fairfax homes . . . how replacement and rerouting services work . . . what codes require . . . and what a technician cleaning out dryer vents actually does.
Free estimates come standard on every project.
Dryer vents rarely fail all at once, and the symptoms reach your laundry room long before anything dramatic. Catching them early is the cheapest repair you’ll ever buy. If you notice any of these, schedule an inspection right away:
Those signs mean the vent is restricted, leaks air, or vents poorly, and each one is a safety hazard. Restricted ducts also reduce dryer efficiency, so you pay twice, on your power bill and in appliance wear-and-tear.
Even more dangerously, lint buildup raises the risk of fire, which is why the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends keeping the lint screen and exhaust duct clean of lint and other debris.
The most common dryer duct repair ABD performs is the least visible: Ductwork crushed flat behind the dryer, or a joint loose inside a wall. A leaky joint sends hot air and lint into the wall instead of outside, and that mix of heat and fuel is the real fire risk. ABD’s repair services reseal connections, replace crushed sections, and retest the run.
The transition hose between dryer and wall usually fails first. Clamps loosen, the hose tears, lint collects on the floor. ABD replaces damaged transition hoses and worn clamps with durable materials, which is often all a clothes dryer vent repair needs. A tight hose settles more complaints than any other part.
Blocked exterior vents stop proper exhaust flow, and in Northern Virginia a technician examining an outdoor dryer apparatus often finds that the blockage is a bird’s nest. ABD repairs damaged ductwork at the wall, replaces termination hoods and pest guards, and installs a bird guard cover that stops nesting without choking the outdoor dryer vent cover. The right dryer vent cover keeps wildlife out and air moving.
When a duct run fights back you get lint in the laundry room and moisture where it doesn’t belong. Poorly routed or excessively long ducts add resistance until the dryer can’t move its own exhaust. ABD traces the pressure problem, clears blockages, and corrects the geometry behind it, because proper airflow is the whole point.
Inspecting the entire run locates the real fault instead of replacing parts and hoping. A thorough dryer vent diagnosis means video inspection of the whole path to find blockages, kinks, leaks, collapsed sections, and improper connections, plus a check for unsafe plastic ducts and a review of vent length and bend count. Detailed inspections separate a real repair from a temporary one, and regular dryer vent inspections keep small faults in dryer vent systems from becoming emergencies. Professional repair services are worth calling for anything inaccessible.
Plastic and foil accordion ducts ought to carry a risk-of-fire warning label. That’s because those ribs trap lint and one kink shuts the vent down. Swapping them for rigid metal is the recommended remedy and the most common dryer vent installation ABD performs, using smooth, rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting, foil tape rather than duct tape, and proper hangers. Smooth metal sheds lint instead of hoarding it.
In Fairfax County, the types of houses span the range from 1970s colonials to townhomes and stacked condos above ground-floor businesses.
Typically, interior units hide the most inefficient ductwork: long runs with several elbows. Where the building allows, ABD reroutes for shorter, straighter runs to reduce lint buildup and extend dryer life. Every bend you eliminate makes the ductwork more efficient. Rerouting is the honest answer when a dryer vent replacement alone can’t fix a bad path.
ABD installs wall and roof terminations, high-efficiency covers, and guards that stop pests and water, which matters most on the upper-floor exits common in local townhomes. Rooftop work and full metal duct services belong with trained technicians. A correct termination protects the structure as much as the duct. Improper installations are a leading cause of weak airflow, so a new vent gets designed here, not improvised.
Gas dryers raise the stakes: A compromised exhaust path is a combustion problem, not a laundry one. For gas dryers ABD checks for proper venting to avoid carbon monoxide buildup, verifies exhaust path integrity, and recommends service if combustion venting is compromised. Proper ventilation on a gas appliance is a safety system, not a convenience.
ABD is locally owned and handles the whole vent with one set of services: Cleaning, repair, replacement, vent cover installation, and dryer hose replacement. If the diagnosis finds a vent that’s sound but packed with lint, routine dryer vent cleaning is the right service and the cheaper one. One crew, one visit, one estimate. Pricing for those services sits on the dryer vent cleaning cost page.
The U.S. Fire Administration attributes nearly 2,900 home fires a year to clogged or faulty vents, and the National Fire Protection Association blames bad installation and poor maintenance as among the leading contributors to dryer fire hazards. Lint is fuel, the duct is like a chimney, and a restricted duct holds heat.
When ABD clears your dryer vent and duct, that removes the fuel and the heat together. The same fire hazards affect every dryer in Fairfax VA, whether it sits in a colonial, a condo, or a small-business office.
Model building codes limit how long a dryer exhaust duct can run and how many bends it can carry, and those limits apply to homes and businesses alike. Long or complex runs often need rerouting or fan assistance to reach proper ventilation. ABD measures the run against those limits to ensure safety, then recommends the appropriate fix for your home’s needs.
Code compliance isn’t merely paperwork here. It’s how your dryer duct remains in safe and efficient operation. Vents should be checked regularly to head off fire hazards, and annual maintenance services are the general recommendation for laundry systems.
Every ABD appointment follows the same six steps, and you see inside your own duct before you approve anything:
ABD confirms the dryer vents efficiently before the truck leaves, then documents the result in photos. Every job ends with evidence. Because each duct path is different, ABD walks clients through the findings in plain language and delivers personalized service built around the home’s unique needs.
Fairfax homeowners own everything from older colonials to modern townhomes and new construction, and each presents different venting challenges. ABD’s technicians know the regional patterns: long runs, multi-story venting, and nesting in exhaust hoods. Local experience makes for a faster, more accurate diagnosis.
ABD’s dryer vent services cover Fairfax and Fairfax County plus Chantilly, Centreville, Annandale, and Vienna, along with Springfield, Falls Church, Burke, and Herndon. Same crew and same standards in every community, with the ABD satisfaction guarantee and photo documentation on every job.
The reasons local homeowners keep calling ABD are unglamorous and specific, but they know we get the job done right for a reasonable rate.

At minimum, once a year for most households, more often for heavy use, long vent runs, or homes with pets. Common dryer vent problems can reduce appliance efficiency, but regular maintenance of dryer vent systems matters for both safety and efficiency, and it’s the easiest way to lower the risk of fire igniting in the laundry room.
Small transitions can be DIY, but full reroutes, metal duct installation, or rooftop terminations should be handled by professionals to ensure code compliance and safety. Specialized tools and industry knowledge of repair services are usually called for, so leave those jobs to the professional dryer vent repair team at ABD.
